Making the world a more compassionate place with you.

When we started The Doering Institute, we set out to make the world a more compassionate place, and our favorite thing to do is work with other people who are on the same mission! That's why the Association of Trauma-Informed Educators (ATIE) was born: to connect with educators who want to help students who have experienced hard things.

What can you expect as a member?

GET ANSWERS

From student behavior that baffles you to frustrating coworker relationships, educators today are navigating more challenges than ever, and often with less help. That's why we bring you relevant, important, practical solutions for everyday frustrations.

FIND SUPPORT AND HEALING

As you work through your own mindset and the secondary trauma from helping students who have experienced hard things, you will find healing and compassion for yourself within the supportive ATIE community. We are growing together!

MAKE TIME FOR CHANGE

Educators today are pulled in so many directions, it is hard to keep track of what's what. That's why we create a time and space for you to focus on what is most important: caring for our most vulnerable students who have experienced hard things!

You are a powerful force for good.

We want to harness that force and help empower you to grow in your practice of trauma-informed education and give you a voice and a choice in how your teacher/educator story unfolds.

We know what it is like to "fail" at loving students well who have experienced hard things because the support just isn't there. And we know that for you, failure is not an option.

You want to care well for vulnerable students, that's why you are here. So we are bringing you the support and encouragement you need to do it right!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Trauma-informed care in schools is a culture shift that encourages both grace and high expectations for students who have experienced difficult things, informed by an understanding of how trauma impacts student brains and behavior.

There is a common misconception about trauma-informed care that goes like this: trauma-informed care is just about releasing students from consequences from their behaviors. This is likely because there are several prominent groups that believe that this is the best path forward for trauma-impacted students.  However, there is no data to support that the complete removal of consequences will lead to better outcomes for these students. In fact, high behavioral and academic expectations are beneficial for students who have been through hard things.

At The Doering Institute, our model of trauma-informed care gives grace for mistakes and maintains high expectations for students.   (And we are careful to talk about the differences between high expectations and unrealistic expectations.)

We are aware that not everyone is able to commit to a membership, but we want everyone to have access to trauma-informed education resources! That's why we have opened up our monthly trainings to anyone, regardless of ATIE membership. The cost will vary for the training sessions, but typically they will be between $20-25 per session. So while it benefits you to be part of the membership because the training is given at a discount (and there are other great benefits), you do not have to be a member to participate in training with us.

The links for our monthly training seminars will be posted on this page when they are live.
